Photographing Anse Lazio: Granite, Light, and the Northwest Bay
The reason Anse Lazio appears on so many lists of the world's most beautiful beaches is almost entirely a photography problem — and a solved one. The ingredients are specific: rounded pink-grey granite boulders at each end of a 600-metre crescent, white sand, water that deepens into a saturated blue-green without a reef to cloud it, and takamaka trees leaning over the back of the beach. Every element has a counterpart in the light. Understanding when the sun hits what, and where to stand, is the difference between a competent record shot and an image that justifies the journey.
The Geology Underneath the Frame
Before talking about light, know what you are shooting. The boulders at Anse Lazio are not volcanic or coral. They are Precambrian granite — continental crust over 750 million years old, the remnant of Seychellia, the microcontinent that separated from India 66 million years ago as the Carlsberg Ridge opened. This is the geological signature of the inner Seychelles: a handful of granitic islands stranded in the middle of the Indian Ocean, among the oldest exposed rock in any tropical archipelago. The boulders are that old history made visible, weathered round by millions of years of rain, salt, and heat into forms that look almost deliberate — stacked, draped, cantilevered at the ends of the bay. No two piles are the same shape. The pink and grey tones are iron-rich feldspar and quartz in the original magma, polished by time. Every telephoto shot that isolates a boulder's surface texture is reading that history in the grain.
The Bay's Orientation and What It Means for Light
Anse Lazio faces northwest. This is the core fact that governs every shooting session here, and it is the opposite of what many guides imply when they call it a "north-facing" beach. At sunrise — which in Praslin (roughly 4° south of the equator) rises nearly due east — the sun crests the forested ridge behind the beach and strikes the granite boulders from behind and slightly above. The boulders at the northern Chevalier Bay end catch that early light on their east-facing faces, going warm and pale gold against the still-dark water. The central sand and the southern boulders remain in soft shadow. This is a productive but narrow window: 30 to 40 minutes after first light before the sun clears the ridge and the shadows flatten.
Midday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. is the dead zone. The equatorial sun is nearly overhead, the shadows vanish, the water bleaches toward white in the shallows, and the granite goes flat grey with no modelling. Bring a polarising filter if you must shoot midday — it will recover some of the turquoise gradient by cutting surface glare — but even then the images fight you.
The productive session is the afternoon and the hour before sunset. As the sun tracks west-northwest, it moves toward the open mouth of the bay. By 4 p.m. the light is raking down the crescent at low angle, catching the texture of the boulders on their western faces and putting the shadow side in deep relief. By 5 p.m. the sand glows a warm amber and the water goes from turquoise to near-teal in the deeper zones. The thirty minutes before the sun touches the horizon — the true golden hour at roughly 6 p.m. local time year-round given the latitude — is the best sustained shooting window of the day. The sun is directly in front of you if you stand facing the bay, so position matters: stand with your back to the takamaka line and shoot toward the boulders and the horizon, or get to the southern headland and shoot northwest along the crescent to include the sun's path in the frame.
The Northern Boulders: Compositions at Chevalier Bay
The northern end of the beach, near the car park arrival point and Le Chevalier Bay restaurant, has the most complex granite pile. Several boulders are large enough that a standing adult barely reaches their mid-point. They stack and lean into the water, creating small channels between them where the sea swirls and the color jumps from pale mint to deep blue in a two-metre distance — a natural exposure test for any camera. Approach compositions here with a wide lens (16–24mm on full frame) and get low, using the sand or rock surface as foreground. The boulders recede into the middle distance with the open bay behind them; the vanishing point naturally pulls the eye toward the water. At golden hour, the sun comes from your left as you face the bay, catching the right-hand faces of the boulders and leaving the left in warm shadow. Shoot tight, avoid including the restaurant structure in the upper right, and time the frame to catch small wash running between the rocks for motion blur at 1/15 second or slower.
The Southern Headland: The Elevated Viewpoint
The southern end of the bay is the less-visited end and the one that repays the most for photographers willing to leave the sand. From the waterline, the southern boulder stack mirrors the northern one — the same rounded granite, the same swirling entry water — but from the south you can also climb the granite itself. The boulders are large enough to scramble, and from the highest accessible point (roughly 8 to 10 metres above the waterline) you look back northwest along the full arc of the 600-metre crescent: white sand curving left, takamaka canopy green along the back edge, boulders at the far northern end, and the open Indian Ocean beyond. This is the composition that shows the full geometry of the bay. Use a 35–50mm equivalent to compress the crescent into a single frame. Shoot in the last hour before sunset, when the light is behind you and the whole beach is warmly lit from the west. Earlier in the day the beach is in front-light from this vantage, which is flat; only the afternoon raking sun gives the sand and water the tonal separation they need.
A rougher path continues from the southern boulders toward Anse Georgette, Praslin's other celebrated beach. The ridgeline 50 to 80 metres up offers intermittent open views back down onto Anse Lazio — the angle is steep and the vegetation is thick, but gaps in the takamaka canopy give elevated shots of the bay that are genuinely rare in wide distribution. It is not a maintained photography platform; treat it as a find-your-own-gap situation and do not count on a clear sightline.
Framing Granite Against Water: The Specific Moves
Three compositions at Anse Lazio have become canonical because the beach enables them reliably. Know them, then decide whether to use them or push past them.
The first is the single boulder with water behind: a clean pink-grey face filling the left third of the frame, the turquoise gradient running right to the horizon. Works in almost any light from 3 p.m. onward; the hard choice is whether to expose for the stone or the water. Expose for the water and bracket up one stop for the stone version.
The second is the wide crescent from standing height on the central sand, takamaka trees at the upper edge, boulders visible at both ends, no building in frame. This composition requires the late-afternoon angle to separate sand from sky; in flat midday light it reads as overexposed white across the bottom third. A graduated neutral-density filter (2-stop soft edge) helps hold the sky.
The third is the reflection shot in the shallow wash zone at the waterline where the backwash film is thin enough to mirror the sky. Timing requires watching the wave rhythm — about ten to fifteen seconds between sets on a calm day — and getting the shutter open in the two-second window before the film drains. A shutter speed around 1/4 to 1/2 second gives slight motion in the deeper water while the reflection holds.
Practical Notes: When to Arrive, What to Carry
The car park near Chevalier Bay fills by 9 a.m. on peak-season days (December through March, April–May shoulder). Arrive before 7:30 a.m. to have the northern boulders to yourself in the soft post-sunrise light; the hill crossing takes five minutes each way and is easy in the cool of early morning, harder in the midday heat. Equipment-wise: a polarising filter is not optional if you want the water colors to read correctly on a sunny day — the equatorial sun at even 30° elevation will blow the surface glare without one. A tripod is useful for the waterline reflection compositions and for the slower shutter speeds in the boulder channels at golden hour. There are no buildings on the beach proper — both restaurants are at the northern end and can be excluded from most compositions without effort.
The northwest monsoon (roughly November through March) brings heavier swell from the direction the bay faces, which means bigger wash at the waterline, more dynamic water in the boulder channels, and also the risk of a sudden downpour that ends a session fast. The southeast trade season (May through October) is calmer, lighter swell, more consistent light, and the driest weather. Both seasons are productive for different reasons; the swell of the northwest monsoon adds energy to water compositions that the flat-calm southeast cannot.
