Reaching Egremni today means reckoning with a beach the Municipality of Lefkada has formally closed since 2025. This guide covers the recommended way in — by boat — along with what is and isn't verified about the staircase, costs, and safety.

Getting There

By Boat (the Recommended Route)

Vasiliki, on Lefkada's southern coast, is the closest departure point at 16 km from Egremni by road — closer than the more commonly cited Nydri, 37 km away. Vasiliki Daily Cruise (Explore Lefkada) runs a daily trip departing 10:00 AM and returning between 18:00 and 18:30, priced at €40 per adult and €20 per child aged 6-12 (lunch available for an extra €10), with a listed capacity of up to 200 passengers. Water taxis from the same port run closer to €12 per person for the Egremni leg.

From Nydri, an eight-hour cruise visits Egremni, Porto Katsiki, and Agiofili for roughly $46-51 per person, live for the 2026 season with free cancellation. Nydri is also the town more guides default to, even though Vasiliki is the shorter, cheaper departure point.

By Road and the Staircase (Currently Closed)

Egremni is about 39 km from Lefkada Town by road, 37 km from Nydri, and 4 km from Athani. No official source gives a road driving distance or time from Preveza-Aktion (PVK) airport, about 36.8 km away in a straight line — a figure that understates the actual drive, since the coast road has to go around the cliffs rather than across them.

The staircase itself, roughly 420 steps rebuilt in 2021 after the 2015 earthquake destroyed the original 347-step version, has been under a municipal closure order since 2025 for ground instability. Storms in late February 2026 (reported 25 February) caused rockfall that damaged it further; by 1 July 2026 a private, non-municipal initiative had cleared the debris and repaired bent railings, but no city engineer had inspected or certified that work. From the clifftop car park, the walk to the top of the stairs is about 1.5 km, with a 30-40 minute descent and up to an hour back up. What "Closed" Means in Practice

The closure is a real, standing order — not a formality. A visitor in early July 2025 reported finding the entry sign covered over and a vehicle gate left with a gap people could slip through, and a €10-per-vehicle charge for parking collected by private individuals with no receipt or signage. None of this has stopped boat operators from advertising and docking at Egremni as a headline stop — the closure as reported covers road and land access; no source addresses whether landing by boat is permitted.

Safety

There is no lifeguard service at Egremni. Entry is steep pebble with quick offshore drop-offs. Anyone descending it is doing so on infrastructure the state has not signed off on.

Local Tips

Vasiliki beats Nydri on distance and price. At 16 km versus 37 km, and with cheaper water-taxi options alongside the organized cruise, Vasiliki is the closer, less-publicized departure point.

Pair it with Porto Katsiki. Egremni's cliff-bound neighbor is about 4 km away along the coast (further by road), and most boat tours already combine the two.

Don't trust a cleared staircase as a certified one. The 2026 repair was done by a private, non-municipal initiative, not municipal engineers. A cleared path is not the same as an inspected one.
