Platges de Comte

Platges de Comte Travel Guide

Platges de Comte represents Ibiza at its most honest—not the nightclub island you've heard about, but the actual Mediterranean beach destination where locals swim in summer and European families spend unhurried August weeks. Located on Ibiza's western coast near the Sant Josep district, these coves deliver genuine sand, monitored water quality rated "excellent" by EU standards, and the kind of access that lets you reach the water in under 30 minutes from the airport. Whether you want an afternoon escape from Ibiza town or a low-key beach base for several days, Platges de Comte functions differently than the southern resort beaches—quieter, safer for families, and transparent about what it actually offers.

Getting There

By Air

Most travelers arrive at Ibiza Airport (IBZ), located 16.5 kilometers northeast of Platges de Comte—roughly a 25–35 minute drive depending on traffic and which cove you're targeting within the Platges de Comte complex. IBZ is Ibiza's only commercial airport and handles flights from across Europe, North Africa, and increasingly from North America via connecting hubs. Summer schedules are dense; winter schedules contract significantly.

From IBZ, exit toward the main island road (PM-803). Head south/west toward Sant Josep de sa Talaia. The road is well-marked and straightforward; rental cars are abundant and typically cost €25–50/day during peak season, €15–25 in winter.

No shuttle bus serves Platges de Comte directly, but taxi service is available from the airport; expect €30–50 depending on exact beach location and time of day (peak times cost more).

By Car

If you're exploring broader Ibiza or arriving from elsewhere:

  • From Ibiza Town (20 km north): Take PM-803 south toward Sant Josep. Allow 25–35 minutes.
  • From Formentera (ferry): Take the ferry to Ibiza Town (1 hour), then drive as above.
  • From mainland Spain: Fly to IBZ; no direct overland routes exist.

Parking at Platges de Comte varies by cove. The larger coves (Cala Conta, the main draw) have limited formal parking that fills by 11 AM in summer. Arrive before 10 AM or prepare to park on adjacent roads and walk 10–15 minutes. Off-season parking is plentiful.

By Public Transit

Ibiza has limited public transit outside Ibiza Town. A few local buses serve Sant Josep, but reliable connections to specific coves are sparse. Autobuses Ibiza operates regional routes; check schedules online—service is seasonal and frequency drops sharply in winter. This route is viable only if you're comfortable with infrequent schedules and don't mind potentially long waits.

Most visitors rent cars or use ride-sharing apps (available in Ibiza Town but less reliable outside the main urban area).

Seasonal Overview

Summer (June–August) is peak season with air temperatures of 28–32°C (82–90°F), water temperatures of 24–26°C (75–79°F), and endless sunshine. This is genuinely swimmable weather—you don't need a wetsuit. Crowds are heaviest in July and August; June offers slightly more breathing room and is often considered the sweet spot for temperature and crowds combined. Beach clubs and restaurants operate at full capacity.

Spring (April–May) brings mild temperatures (18–24°C / 64–75°F), fewer crowds, and increasing daylight. Water is cool (17–20°C / 63–68°F)—a wetsuit or at least a rash guard is wise for extended swimming, though many do swim without. This is excellent for families seeking quieter beaches and for those who dislike extreme heat.

Fall (September–October) mirrors spring with pleasant temperatures (20–26°C / 68–79°F) and declining tourist pressure. September feels like an extension of summer; October shifts cooler and occasionally rainy. Water remains swimmable without a wetsuit through mid-September, but a thin wetsuit becomes practical by October.

Winter (November–March) is cool (8–16°C / 46–61°F) with occasional rain and frequent overcast skies. Water temperature drops to 13–15°C (55–59°F)—genuine cold-water territory requiring a 4–5mm wetsuit. This is when Ibiza becomes local-oriented, with many businesses closed or operating reduced hours. However, winter offers solitude, dramatic lighting, and the satisfaction of having a Mediterranean beach nearly to yourself.

Where to Stay

Platges de Comte itself has no hotels directly on the beach—it remains residential and protected. Accommodation clusters in nearby towns that give you either quiet beach base or access to Ibiza's broader scene.

Sant Josep de sa Talaia (Closest Town)

Sant Josep is the administrative hub nearest to Platges de Comte, 7.4 kilometers away. It's a genuine working Ibiza town—not touristy, with local restaurants and markets, slower pace than Ibiza Town. Accommodation here includes small guesthouses, vacation rentals, and a handful of modest hotels. Staying here puts you closest to the beach (15–20 minute drive) while keeping you grounded in local Ibiza life. Expect €60–120/night for budget to mid-range options.

Cala Jondal / Southwest Coast

Further south on Ibiza's quieter southwestern coast, the Cala Jondal area has upscale beach club hotels and vacation rentals. This puts you closer to other quieter southern coves and further from Ibiza's party scene. More refined, fewer crowds, pricier (€150–300+/night).

Ibiza Town

Ibiza Town (20 kilometers away, 30 minutes drive) is where most international visitors stay. This offers maximum choice of hotels, restaurants, nightlife, and cultural options. However, it means commuting to Platges de Comte for beach days—manageable but less integrated. Hotels range from €70–500+/night depending on class.

Playa d'en Bossa (Southeast Coast)

Opposite side of the island, about 40 minutes away. Touristy beach resort area with abundant hotels and amenities. Only choose this if you're splitting time between beach and Ibiza Town nightlife; it's far from Platges de Comte's quiet appeal.

Accommodation Types

  • Vacation rentals (Airbnb, Vrbo): €70–150/night for 1–2 bedrooms; abundant in Sant Josep area; book 4–6 weeks ahead in summer
  • Small guesthouses / pensiónes: €50–100/night; local character, seasonal closures in winter
  • Mid-range hotels: €80–150/night; limited supply but available
  • Luxury beach clubs: €200–400+/night; upscale experience, fewer options near Platges de Comte specifically

Booking strategy: Summer requires 6–8 weeks advance planning. Spring, fall, and winter offer last-minute availability. Book directly with property owners when possible; rental commissions inflate prices on major platforms.

Safety

Swimming Conditions

Platges de Comte's water is safe and monitored:

  • Water quality: EU-rated "excellent"—formally tested and compliant with European bathing standards
  • Water temperature: 13–26°C (55–79°F) depending on season; comfortable without wetsuit June–September; wetsuit recommended September–May
  • Currents and conditions: Moderate; protected coves mean fewer dangerous currents than exposed beaches. Always respect local conditions.
  • Shark incidents: Zero recorded incidents (GSAF data for this location)
  • Lifeguards: On duty seasonally (typically June–September); marked by flags and signage

Swim during daylight, never alone, and respect the buddy system. Off-season (November–March), verify that lifeguards are on duty before assuming coverage.

General Safety and Security

Platges de Comte itself is safe. Sant Josep and surrounding areas are low-crime. However:

  • Vehicle theft: Don't leave valuables in your car, especially unattended during peak hours. Use hotel safes for passports, excess cash, electronics.
  • Pickpocketing: Minimal risk at the beach; standard caution in Ibiza Town during nightlife hours.
  • Alcohol and substances: Ibiza's party reputation is real; avoid purchasing or using unlicensed substances. Stick to licensed venues if drinking.

Health

  • Sun protection: Mediterranean sun is intense. Sunscreen SPF 30+ is essential, even on overcast days. Reapply every 2 hours.
  • Dehydration: Heat builds quickly; carry water and drink regularly, especially if swimming or hiking.
  • Insect-borne illness: Mosquitoes are seasonal. Standard insect repellent (DEET-based) works. Dengue and other vector-borne diseases are rare but have appeared; prevention through repellent is sensible.
  • Medical care: Ibiza Town has hospitals; Sant Josep has a clinic. Private medical care is available and expensive. Ensure travel insurance covers medical evacuation if needed.

Local Tips

Arrive early for parking. Summer crowds peak 10 AM–2 PM. Arrive by 9 AM to secure good parking at Cala Conta or walk from a distance if later.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen. Mediterranean marine life depends on it. Avoid oxybenzone and octinoxate; use mineral (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide) alternatives.

Respect the marine reserve. Parts of this area have protection status. Observe mooring rules and don't collect shells or organisms.

Visit a local market. Sant Josep has a Wednesday market. Ibiza Town's Mercat Vell (old market) offers local produce, cheese, and prepared foods—excellent for picnic supplies.

Water shoes are wise. Rocky entry points exist at some coves; waterproof shoes prevent cuts and cuts from sharp rocks or sea urchins.

Siesta culture is real. Many shops and restaurants close 2–5 PM. Plan accordingly; don't expect full services mid-afternoon.

Wine is cheap. Spanish wine at dinner or beach clubs costs €5–12; Catalan DO wines offer excellent value. This is worth savoring.

Learn a few Catalan phrases. "Merci" (thank you), "adéu" (goodbye), "por favor" (please) go a long way. Many locals appreciate the effort even if they're comfortable in English.

October is underrated. Post-summer crowds, still-warm water, dramatic light—October offers superior photography and beach experience compared to peak July/August madness.

Sunset from the western shore is architectural. Platges de Comte faces west; sunset falls directly onto the water, creating clean light for hours. Evening swims offer different experience than midday heat.
