Cala Vedella Travel Guide
Cala Vedella is a compact family beach on Ibiza's southwestern coast, tucked into a rocky cove that feels like a private Mediterranean discovery despite being just 13.7 kilometers from Ibiza Airport. The cove's narrow entrance and sheltered bay make it calm and intimate—a genuine alternative to Ibiza's more crowded northern beaches. Whether you're seeking a quiet family day or a picturesque swimming spot away from the party scene, Cala Vedella delivers authenticity without requiring special effort to reach it.
Getting There
By Air
Most visitors arrive at Ibiza Airport (IBZ), Spain's third-busiest airport and the gateway for all international traffic to the island. The airport sits 13.7 kilometers north of Cala Vedella—a 20–25 minute drive under normal conditions. Direct flights arrive from across Europe (London, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Germany), with frequent connections from Spanish mainland cities.
From the airport, car rental desks in the baggage claim area offer vehicles starting at €25–40/day for basic manual transmission cars (standard in Spain). GPS/navigation is essential; enter coordinates 38.913°N, 1.224°E or "Cala Vedella, Sant Josep" into Google Maps.
By Car
From Ibiza Airport (recommended route):
- Exit the airport heading toward Ibiza Town
- Follow signs for Santa Eulária (northeast) for the first 3 kilometers
- Turn south on Carretera de Sant Josep (road PM-803)
- Continue for 8 kilometers through agricultural land toward Sant Josep
- In Sant Josep village, follow signage for Cala Vadella (note the Catalan spelling variation)
- The final 1.5 kilometers is a narrow, potholed road descending steeply to the beach (low-clearance vehicles and motorcycles are common here)
- Limited parking at the beach entrance; arrive before 11 AM in summer to secure a spot
Total drive time: 20–25 minutes from airport to beach. Gas costs approximately €3–5 for the round trip.
From Ibiza Town (8 kilometers south):
- Take Avenida de España heading southwest
- Merge onto PM-803 heading toward Sant Josep
- Follow Cala Vedella signs; total time is 15–20 minutes
From Eivissa Harbor (if arriving by ferry from Valencia or Barcelona):
- Drive west out of the old harbor district
- Head toward Sant Josep on PM-803
- Distance is roughly 10 kilometers; 20 minutes drive
By Public Transit
Ibiza's public bus system (Autobuses Pitiusas) operates limited service to Sant Josep from Ibiza Town (central bus station on Avenida de Isidor Macabich). The L1 bus departs roughly every 1–2 hours and takes 30–40 minutes to reach Sant Josep village center. From there, a taxi or local bus is necessary to reach Cala Vedella itself, adding another 15–20 minutes and approximately €8–12 cost.
Total journey time via bus: 60–90 minutes, making this viable for day trips from Ibiza Town but impractical for multi-day stays. During summer high season, buses fill up; arrive at the station 20 minutes early.
By Boat
No ferry service exists to Cala Vedella itself, but private boat access is straightforward. The cove has moderate depth (4–6 meters) and good holding ground for anchoring. A small harbor or mooring buoy system does not exist; anchor in the center of the bay away from the beach and take a dinghy ashore. The entrance is wide enough for vessels up to 40 feet without difficulty.

Seasonal Overview
Summer (June–August) is peak season. Daytime temperatures range from 28–32°C (82–90°F) with water temperatures around 24–26°C (75–79°F)—comfortable for extended swimming without a wetsuit. Expect crowds on weekends and national holidays (Spanish Constitution Day on December 6 is observed; check local calendar). Humidity is moderate. This is the only guaranteed safe period for beach infrastructure and restaurant availability.
Late Spring (May) and Early Fall (September–October) offer ideal conditions: 22–28°C (72–82°F) air temperature, water at 20–24°C (68–75°F), and far fewer tourists. Restaurants remain open; the beach is never overcrowded. September retains full summer warmth and is underrated by tourists who assume it's peak season.
Winter (November–April) brings mild but unstable weather. Daytime temperatures hover around 12–16°C (54–61°F), with frequent rain (January and February are wettest). Water drops to 13–15°C (55–59°F)—wetsuits are essential. Restaurants may close certain days. However, Cala Vedella in winter solitude is genuinely beautiful: dramatic skies, empty beaches, and the island stripped of tourism.

Where to Stay
Cala Vedella Village
A handful of small aparthotels and vacation rentals sit on the hillside above the beach. These range from simple one-bedroom units (€60–100/night in shoulder season, €120–180 in August) to modest family apartments (€100–150 in low season, €200+ in high season). Advantage: direct beach access and minimal commute. Disadvantage: limited restaurant choice and higher isolation if you want nightlife or services.
Sant Josep de sa Talaia
The nearest town (5.1 kilometers north) is the better value for accommodation. Sant Josep is an authentic Ibizan village with a central square, several restaurants and bars, and better rental availability. Small hotels and aparthotels range €80–150/night year-round, with vacation rentals at €90–140. The drive to Cala Vedella is 10–15 minutes, making it a practical base. Sant Josep also has a small supermarket, pharmacy, and ATM—services absent at the beach itself.
Ibiza Town (Eivissa)
The main city, 10 kilometers north, offers full hotel infrastructure (€120–250/night) and maximum restaurant/nightlife options. The commute to Cala Vedella is 20–25 minutes by car. Most package tourists stay here and day-trip to beaches.
San Antonio de Portmany
West coast town 15 kilometers away with beach resort atmosphere and moderate pricing (€100–180/night). Quieter than Ibiza Town but more developed than Sant Josep. 25–30 minute drive to Cala Vedella.

Safety
Water Conditions
Cala Vedella's water is EU-monitored and consistently rated "good" for bathing. The enclosed bay creates exceptionally calm conditions:
- Water temperature: 13–15°C in winter (wetsuits essential), 24–26°C in summer (no wetsuit needed)
- Currents: Virtually none within the bay; tidal range is minor (0.6–1.2 meters)
- Visibility: Generally clear (4–8 meters), occasionally reduced after heavy rain due to runoff
- Shark incidents: Zero recorded incidents in the Mediterranean around Ibiza
- Lifeguards: None; swim at your own risk. Buddies are strongly recommended
The shallow, calm conditions make this an ideal family beach; children can wade safely to 100 meters offshore in summer.
General Safety
Cala Vedella and Sant Josep are safe by all metrics. Police presence is visible, and theft is rare. However, standard travel precautions apply:
- Vehicle security: Do not leave valuables in parked cars; use the trunk for bags and valuables
- Nighttime: The beach road is rural and unlit; avoid driving it after dark unless familiar with local roads
- Water safety: Avoid swimming alone and always use the buddy system
The village of Sant Josep is particularly safe; locals frequent restaurants and the central square in the evenings.
Health Considerations
- UV exposure: Ibiza's latitude receives intense sun reflection off water. SPF 50+ is necessary even on cloudy days
- Dehydration: Bring ample water; the beach bar may not stock sufficient supplies
- Mosquitoes: Minimal at the beach itself due to wind, but bring repellent if staying in nearby villages
- Pharmacies: Farmacia in Sant Josep is open weekdays 9 AM–2 PM and 5–8 PM; Sunday hours are limited
EU citizens have reciprocal healthcare access; bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
Local Tips
Arrive before 11 AM in summer. Parking fills quickly on weekends and sunny days. Early arrival secures a spot and gives you the beach at its calmest.
The water is shallowest in the southern corner near the eastern rocky outcrop. Families with small children should position themselves here; the water remains swimable knee-deep for 50+ meters.
Bring your own food. The beach bar operates May–September and can run short of supplies mid-afternoon. A supermarket picnic from Sant Josep (10 minutes away) is more reliable and cheaper.
The rocky ridges above the beach contain caves and lookout points worth exploring if you have spare time. Wear proper shoes (the rocks are sharp) and avoid disturbing nesting seabirds in spring.
Low tide exposes more sand and reveals tide pools. Tides are modest on Ibiza, but checking tide times online before your visit can optimize beach layout.
Sant Josep's central square has several good restaurants where you can dine on local Ibizan food—try bullit de peix (traditional fish stew) at €15–20. This is where locals eat, not tourists.
Sunset is excellent here. The western-facing cove catches the sunset nicely. Stay until 8:30–9:30 PM in summer for best light.
If visiting October–April, bring a waterproof jacket. Mediterranean autumn rain squalls pass quickly but arrive without warning.
The road to Cala Vedella is narrow and potholed. Drive slowly on approach, especially during wet weather. SUVs and regular cars manage fine; very low-clearance sports cars should be cautious.
