Getting There

By Air

Most visitors arrive at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), located 12 kilometers south of Condado Beach (approximately 20–30 minutes by taxi or Uber depending on traffic). This is Puerto Rico's primary hub with direct flights from major US cities (New York, Miami, Boston, Philadelphia) and San Juan's only international commercial airport.

The drive from SJU follows the PR-25 expressway northbound, connecting to PR-1 (Ponce de León Avenue) heading east toward the beach. Traffic is heaviest during morning (7–9 AM) and evening (5–7 PM) rush hours; plan accordingly if arriving during these windows.

By Car

If driving from elsewhere on Puerto Rico:

• From Ponce (75 kilometers south): Take PR-2 north, then PR-1 east into San Juan; plan 1.5–2 hours.
• From Mayagüez (150 kilometers west): Take PR-2 east, then PR-1 toward San Juan; plan 3–3.5 hours.

Parking at Condado is available but expensive. Street parking along Ashford Avenue fills quickly during weekends and midday; expect $10–25 for metered spaces. By Public Transit

San Juan's public transit is limited compared to continental US cities. DTOP buses operate routes throughout the metro area, but frequency and reliability are inconsistent. The planned Tren Urbano (urban train) system connects parts of San Juan but does not currently serve Condado Beach—the system terminates at stations east and west of the neighborhood. Do not rely on it for beach access.

Taxi and Uber/Lyft are reliable alternatives. From SJU airport to Condado, expect $25–40 by taxi (negotiated rate or meter) or $18–28 by Uber. Within San Juan, short rides to Condado from Old San Juan cost $8–15.

By Sea

Water-based arrival is impractical for most visitors. While the beach has open Atlantic access and cruise ships dock at nearby convention center facilities, no passenger ferry service connects to Condado. Private boats can anchor offshore, but a skiff to shore or use of nearby marinas (15–20 minutes by water from Condado) is necessary.

Spring (May–May into early June) offers warm weather (80–85°F/27–29°C), decreasing crowds, and summer-level water temperatures (82°F/28°C). Rain increases slightly but remains manageable. Fewer tourists create a more local atmosphere while conditions remain excellent.

Summer (June–August) is warm (82–88°F/28–31°C) but enters the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1–November 30). While direct hurricane hits are rare, tropical systems increase rainfall and occasional coastal swells. Crowds depend on school holidays; local families dominate mid-June through early August, creating a more Puerto Rican beach atmosphere. Prices drop 20–30% from winter levels.

Fall (September–November) carries peak hurricane season risk, with September–October being statistically the most active months. However, direct strikes on Puerto Rico remain infrequent. Heat and humidity are high; rain and tropical squalls are common. Crowds are lowest and prices are lowest. Only recommended if you monitor weather and can adjust plans flexibly.

Condado Neighborhood

Staying directly in Condado places you steps from the beach and the Ashford Avenue dining and shopping corridor. This is the premium option.

Swimming Conditions

Condado's ocean conditions are genuine Atlantic: currents, swells, and rip tides are present year-round and require awareness.

• Water temperature: Ranges from 78°F (26°C) in winter to 85°F (29°C) in summer. Hypothermia is not a risk; wetsuits are unnecessary unless you plan extended sessions in winter.
• Wave action: Atlantic swells roll directly into Condado Beach. Surfers find conditions variable; swimmers should avoid the northern end (stronger currents) and stick to lifeguarded sections, which operate 9 AM–5 PM daily.
• Currents and rips: Strong northbound and offshore currents exist, particularly near the northern end of the beach and after storms. If caught in a rip, do not fight it; swim parallel to shore until clear, then return to beach.
• Visibility: Generally clear (3–5 meters), though post-storm visibility drops and water color becomes murky.
• Shark incidents: Zero recorded incidents at Condado Beach.

Visit lifeguarded sections. The beach spans 2 kilometers; lifeguards are concentrated near the Convention Center and La Ventana al Mar park. Unguarded sections have stronger currents—safer for experienced swimmers only.

Arrive early on weekends. If visiting Saturday or Sunday, be at the beach by 9–10 AM to find parking before mid-morning crowds and heat peak.

Time the tides. Condado has significant tidal range (3–4 feet); low tide exposes more sand and creates calmer water. Tide tables are freely available online. Afternoon high tides can create stronger currents.

Ashford Avenue is dining central. The restaurant concentration on Ashford is unmatched in Puerto Rico. Make reservations for dinner; walk-ins face waits of 30+ minutes during peak hours (7–9 PM).

The northern end (near Dos Hermanos Bridge) has the strongest currents. This is the technical surfer section; swimmers should avoid it unless highly experienced.

Old San Juan is a 5-minute ride. Combining Old San Juan's colonial history (El Morro fortress, cobblestone plazas) with Condado Beach creates a complete San Juan itinerary.

Sunset is peak time. Evening light (6–7 PM) transforms Ashford Avenue and the water; restaurants overflow, and the beach becomes a social gathering space. Go with the flow or avoid crowds by timing dinner earlier.
