Grote Knip Travel Guide

Grote Knip sits on Curaçao's west coast, in the Bandabou district between Westpunt and Lagún, roughly 35 km by road from Willemstad. Public buses from Willemstad (Otrobanda terminal) reach Westpunt but run infrequently — roughly every 1-2 hours — so a rental car is the practical way to reach it. The beach has thatched palapas, rental sun loungers and umbrellas, and a small pavilion with intermittent snack vending, but no lifeguard presence; a visitor should still plan on bringing most of what they need for the day.

Getting There

By Air. Hato / Curaçao International Airport (CUR) is the island's only commercial airport. The dataset for this beach records a straight-line distance of 27.6 km to CUR — that is a direct-line measurement, not a driving distance. The actual road route runs through Willemstad and out toward Westpunt, and Curaçao-focused sources put the drive at roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic through the capital.

By Car. A rental car is close to mandatory. Westpunt, the nearest village, depends on neighboring Barber for supplies, and Wikipedia describes the wider Bandabou district as having poor infrastructure and limited economic opportunity — this is not a corridor with taxi stands or ride-share density. Follow the island's single main westbound road from Willemstad toward Westpunt; Grote Knip and its neighbor Kleine Knip are both signed off that road.

Currency

Curaçao's currency changed within the past year and a half. The Caribbean guilder (XCG) became legal tender on 31 March 2025, replacing the Netherlands Antillean guilder (ANG); the ANG stopped being legal tender on 1 July 2025 after a co-circulation period, though it remains exchangeable at commercial banks for a year after introduction and at the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten for decades after that. XCG is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of roughly 1.79–1.80 to 1, the same peg the ANG held. US dollars and euros are widely accepted alongside XCG.

Best Time to Visit

Curaçao's rainy season runs roughly October through February, with showers that typically fall at night rather than during the day, so the beach is rarely rained out in daylight hours even in the wetter months. Curaçao lies outside the Atlantic's main hurricane development region, and no hurricane has made direct landfall on the island since the U.S. National Hurricane Center began tracking storms — though the island is still occasionally brushed by systems passing near it; Hurricane Tomas in 2010 dropped more than half the island's average annual rainfall total in a single day on its eastern side, without making landfall.

Wave conditions at Grote Knip itself follow a measurable seasonal pattern: Open-Meteo's marine reanalysis (2023-2024) puts February as the roughest month, averaging 1.36 m and peaking near 1.78 m, and October as the calmest, averaging 0.99 m.

Where to Stay

Grote Knip has no accommodation on site or within easy walking distance. Westpunt, the nearest village, is small — Wikipedia records a 2011 population of 738 across nearly 14 km², with the village elementary school closed since 2002 — and has limited services of its own. The great majority of visitors base themselves in Willemstad, roughly 35 km away, which has the island's concentration of hotels, restaurants, and the historic Punda and Otrobanda districts. Basing farther from the beach means a longer drive for every visit; basing in Westpunt itself means fewer services but a shorter trip to the sand.

Safety

This site's beach dataset, derived from Open-Meteo's marine wave statistics, labels the water at Grote Knip plainly: "Exposed — real surf, and rip current to respect." That is a working description, not a marketing one — this is not a sheltered, flat-water cove, and conditions vary by month, from an October average of 0.99 m up to a February average of 1.36 m (peak recorded 1.78 m). No shark incidents are recorded for this beach in the dataset behind this page. Sun exposure is still worth planning for: the palapas near the tree line offer only patchy shade, and most of the open sand stays exposed all day.

A Detour Worth Planning For

Landhuis Kenepa, the plantation house that gave Grote Knip its name, stands about a kilometer inland. • Bring water, food, and sun protection as backup; a small pavilion sells snacks intermittently, but don't count on it for a full meal.
• The beach is reef-adjacent — a narrow strip of coral rubble separates the sand from open water and marks the start of a reef used for snorkeling.
• Kleine Knip, a smaller cove, sits immediately south and makes a reasonable second stop on the same drive.
