Omaha Beach

Omaha Beach Travel Guide

Omaha Beach stands as one of Normandy's most historically significant and evocative coastal destinations. Located on the north coast of France in Lower Normandy, this 2-kilometer stretch of sand is forever linked to World War II history while offering visitors a compelling blend of memorial sites, dramatic coastal scenery, and access to the broader Normandy region. Whether you're coming for the historical significance or the natural beauty of the Norman coastline, this guide will help you plan your visit.

Omaha Beach, Normandy,

Getting There

Omaha Beach is accessible by multiple routes depending on your starting point and preferred mode of transport.

By Air

The nearest major airport is Caen Carpiquet Airport (CFR), located 36.8 km southeast of the beach—approximately a 45-minute drive. This regional airport handles flights from Paris, London, and other European hubs, primarily via budget carriers like Ryanair and regional services.

For more international flight options, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) is 220 km away (2.5–3 hour drive) and offers significantly more airlines and frequencies. Paris Orly (ORY) is slightly closer at 215 km but with similar travel time.

By Car

From Caen airport, take the D-Day highway (Route D-Day/N13) north toward Bayeux, then follow signs to Port-en-Bessin-Huppain (the nearest significant town, 8.6 km away). The final approach uses local roads through Normandy's characteristic bocage landscape.

From Paris, take the A13 autoroute northwest toward Rouen, then continue on N138 and N13 toward Caen. Exit toward Bayeux and follow coastal signs. The total journey is 2.5–3 hours.

From the UK (if traveling via ferry), sail into Cherbourg or Roscoff and drive east; Omaha is 90 km from Cherbourg (1.5 hours) via the N1.

By Train

The nearest railway station with significant service is Bayeux, 30 km south. Regular trains connect Bayeux to Paris Saint-Lazare (2.5 hours) and Caen (30 minutes). From Bayeux, rent a car or take a local taxi/shuttle service to reach the beach—the town itself is well-positioned as a base for exploring Omaha and other D-Day beaches.

By Bus

Bus services in this region are limited. Local operators like Nomad Mobility serve Port-en-Bessin and nearby villages, but frequency is sparse. Buses are practical mainly if staying in a nearby town.

By Boat

For those with nautical interests, Omaha Beach is accessible by small boat. Port-en-Bessin-Huppain, immediately to the west, is a working fishing harbor with limited visitor mooring facilities. The English Channel can be rough; consult local maritime conditions before departing.

Best Time to Visit

Normandy's coastal climate is temperate maritime, meaning mild but unpredictable weather year-round.

☀️

Weather

Historical climate averages and live forecasts for this beach are coming soon. See the travel section above for seasonal guidance.

Water Temperature (Summer)15–17°C(59–63°F)
Water Temperature (Winter)8–10°C(46–50°F)

Spring (April–May)

Daytime temperatures rise to 12–16°C (54–61°F). Wildflowers bloom along the cliffs. Tourist crowds are manageable. Rain is frequent but often brief. Excellent for walking and photography.

Summer (June–August)

Peak season. Temperatures reach 18–22°C (64–72°F). Days are long (sunset after 10 PM in June). Beaches are busiest in July and August, particularly around French school holidays (mid-July to late August). The water remains cold but swimmable for hardy visitors. Book accommodations months in advance. Rainfall is lowest but still possible.

Autumn (September–October)

Temperatures drop to 15–17°C (59–63°F). Crowds thin substantially after Labor Day. The sea is slightly warmer than spring. Atlantic storms become more frequent. Golden light and fewer tourists make this popular with photographers and historians. September is often considered ideal.

Winter (November–March)

Daytime highs rarely exceed 9°C (48°F), and wind is constant. Many visitor facilities close seasonally. However, you'll encounter virtually no crowds, and the dramatic, moody landscape appeals to certain travelers. Walking conditions can be excellent on clear days. Flights and accommodation are cheapest.

Where to Stay

Most visitors base themselves in one of several nearby towns rather than directly on Omaha Beach, where accommodation is limited.

Port-en-Bessin-Huppain (8.6 km away)

The closest town with visitor services. This working fishing village has a compact harbor, seafood restaurants, and a handful of small hotels and guesthouses. It's practical for a 1–2 night base with authentic local character. Expect narrow streets, limited parking, and simple accommodations at moderate prices.

Bayeux (30 km away)

The major regional hub and most popular base for D-Day beach visitors. This medieval town survived WWII largely intact and features the famous Bayeux Tapestry museum. Accommodation ranges from budget hostels to upscale country hotels. Restaurants, shops, and services are plentiful. From here, Omaha Beach is a 30-minute drive. Bayeux is ideal if you're spending 3+ days exploring multiple D-Day sites.

Arromanches-les-Bains (20 km away)

A charming seaside resort with Gold Beach (another D-Day beach) directly accessible. More touristy than Port-en-Bessin but smaller and quieter than Bayeux. Good mid-range accommodations and restaurants with sea views. Suitable for visitors wanting a beach-town atmosphere.

Normandy Countryside Villages

Smaller villages like Ryes, Formigny, and Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer offer rural guesthouses and farm stays (gîtes). These provide authentic countryside experience and often better value, though they require a car and are 15–25 km from Omaha.

  • Hotels: Mid-range 2–3 star hotels dominate. Budget €70–120/night for clean, functional rooms.
  • Guesthouses (Chambres d'Hôtes): Family-run B&Bs offering character and personal service. €60–100/night.
  • Vacation Rentals (Gîtes): Weekly cottage rentals popular in summer; daily rates available off-season.

  • Camping: Several campsites operate near Port-en-Bessin and surrounding villages; €15–30/night.
