Orchard Beach Travel Guide
Orchard Beach is a 115-acre public beach and park located in the Bronx, New York City, offering a unique urban waterfront escape along the East River. Despite its industrial surroundings and modest notability score, it serves as an important recreational destination for locals and a surprisingly accessible day-trip option for visitors to NYC. The beach combines sandy shores with extensive parkland, making it more than just a swimming destination—it's a nature reserve within the city limits.
Getting There
By Air
Orchard Beach is served by three major New York City airports, all within 30 minutes to an hour of the beach:
LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is the closest option at just 12.1 km (7.5 miles) away. From LaGuardia, take the Q70 bus or taxi directly toward the Bronx, or rent a car and head south on the Van Wyck Expressway before connecting to local roads. Typical travel time: 25–35 minutes depending on traffic.
JFK International Airport (JFK) lies about 40 km southeast. Drive via the Van Wyck Expressway north, then use the FDR Drive or Bruckner Expressway to reach the beach. Travel time: 45–60 minutes in light traffic, 90+ minutes during rush hour.
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey is approximately 50 km away. Cross into New York via the Lincoln Tunnel or Holland Tunnel, then navigate to the Bronx. Travel time: 50–75 minutes.
By Car
From Manhattan, take the FDR Drive north along the East Side, then transition to the Bruckner Expressway heading east into the Bronx. Exit toward Orchard Beach Road. The drive from Midtown Manhattan typically takes 30–45 minutes in normal traffic, but can stretch to 90+ minutes during peak hours (7–10 AM, 4–7 PM weekdays).
From the north (Westchester County), take the Hutchinson River Parkway south directly into the Orchard Beach parking area. Parking is available at the main beach facility; fees are modest (typically $5–$10 per vehicle in summer).
By Public Transit
The New York City Subway offers the most economical option for NYC residents and visitors. Take the 2 or 5 train (IRT Lexington Line) to Pelham Parkway station in the Bronx. From there, it's a 1.2 km (0.75-mile) walk or short bus ride to Orchard Beach. Alternatively, the 6 train to Pelham Parkway also works. The entire journey from Midtown Manhattan costs a single subway fare ($2.75) and takes roughly 40–50 minutes.
The Bx40 or Bx42 bus also serves the area from various Bronx neighborhoods.
By Boat
Orchard Beach's waterfront location makes it accessible by private boat. There is limited docking and mooring availability; contact the NYC Parks Department or visit the Orchard Beach marina for current information.
Best Time to Visit
Seasonal Overview
Summer (June–August) is peak season. Water temperatures reach 70–75°F (21–24°C), and air temperatures often exceed 80°F (27°C). Expect the most crowded conditions, especially on weekends. Beach facilities and concessions are fully operational. However, urban heat can be intense, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August.
Spring (April–May) offers mild temperatures (55–70°F / 13–21°C) and lower crowds. The water is still cool (50–60°F / 10–15°C), making swimming less comfortable but ideal for jogging, cycling, and birdwatching. Trees and park vegetation are in bloom, making it beautiful for photography.
Fall (September–October) is arguably the best time to visit. Temperatures range from 60–75°F (15–24°C), humidity drops, and Labor Day marks the end of peak tourism. Water temperatures remain swimmable (65–70°F / 18–21°C) through mid-September. September weather is typically stable with clear skies.
Winter (November–March) is quiet and undervisited. Temperatures drop to 30–50°F (-1 to 10°C), and water becomes too cold for most swimmers. The beach transforms into a birdwatching paradise as migratory species pass through. Snow is occasional; plan for icy conditions after precipitation.
Crowd Patterns by Month
- January–March: Minimal crowds, best for solitude and wildlife viewing
- April–May: Moderate crowds, ideal balance of weather and accessibility
- June–July: Peak summer crowds, fully staffed facilities
- August: Still busy but slightly less crowded than July
- September–October: Secondary peak season; excellent weather, moderate crowds
- November–December: Very light crowds, potential for bad weather

Where to Stay
Nearby Neighborhoods
Orchard Beach itself has no beachfront hotels or resorts. However, several neighborhoods within 3–5 km offer accommodation options:
Pelham Manor (3.6 km away) is an affluent Westchester suburb just north of the beach. It offers a quieter, more residential atmosphere with bed-and-breakfasts, upscale inns, and vacation rentals. This area is best if you're renting a car and want a peaceful base.
Pelham Bay (adjacent to Orchard Beach) is a quieter residential Bronx neighborhood with fewer tourist amenities but authentic local character. Vacation rentals and modest inns are available.
City Island (4 km northeast) is a charming nautical enclave with waterfront character, seafood restaurants, and a small-town vibe despite being within NYC. Boutique inns and vacation rentals cater to visitors seeking a more upscale, waterfront experience.
The Bronx (South/Central) – For budget-conscious travelers, the broader Bronx offers more affordable hotels, hostels, and Airbnb options. Areas like Fordham or near the Grand Concourse are cheaper but less immediately scenic, requiring 15–25 minutes travel to the beach.
Manhattan – Many visitors base themselves in Manhattan (particularly Upper East Side or Midtown) and take the subway out for a day trip. Hotels in those areas range widely in price but offer the most dining and entertainment options.
Accommodation Types
- Hotels and Inns: Modest chains and independent inns are scattered through Pelham Manor and City Island; expect $100–$200/night in shoulder season, $150–$250/night in summer.
- Vacation Rentals: Airbnb, VRBO, and Booking.com offer apartments and houses in surrounding neighborhoods; prices range $80–$300+/night depending on size and location.
- Bed & Breakfasts: Several family-run B&Bs operate in Pelham Manor and Pelham Bay; typically $90–$180/night.
- Budget Lodging: Hostels and budget hotels in the Bronx proper can be found for $60–$120/night but require transit to reach Orchard Beach.
Costs
Orchard Beach itself is a public park with free admission. Parking is affordable at $5–$10 per vehicle during summer months; winter rates may be slightly lower. Public transit via NYC Subway is the cheapest option at $2.75 per ride.
Food at the beach concessions and nearby restaurants is moderately priced. A casual lunch runs $12–$18 per person. City Island, while slightly pricier, offers excellent seafood at $15–$35 per entree. Restaurants in the Bronx proper are generally cheaper ($10–$20 per meal).
Accommodations in the area are mid-range by NYC standards. Budget options in the inner Bronx start around $60–$100/night, while nicer inns and hotels near City Island or Pelham Manor run $120–$250/night. Vacation rentals split the difference.
Safety
Swimming Conditions
Orchard Beach is situated on the East River, not the ocean, which affects water quality and conditions. The water is generally safe for swimming during summer months, but several factors warrant caution:
- Water Quality: Post-heavy rainfall, sewage overflow can occur in NYC waterways. Check NYC Parks' water quality advisories before swimming, particularly after storms.
- Currents and Tides: The East River has significant tidal flows. Swimmers should stay in designated swimming areas and be aware of changing water levels.
- Temperature: Water ranges from 50°F (10°C) in spring/fall to 75°F (24°C) in peak summer. Hypothermia is a risk outside summer months.
Shark Incidents: With zero recorded shark incidents at Orchard Beach, this is not a safety concern.
General Safety
Orchard Beach and its surrounding parkland are generally safe during daylight hours, especially on busy weekends. The area is well-patrolled by NYC Parks enforcement and police. Avoid isolated areas of the park at dusk or after dark. Like all NYC parks, petty theft can occur—keep valuables out of sight and in secure bags.
The nearest neighborhoods (Pelham Bay, Pelham Manor) are residential and safe. City Island is particularly secure and family-friendly.
Health Considerations
- Sun Protection: UV exposure is intense; sunscreen (SPF 30+) is essential.
- Insects: Mosquitoes can be prevalent in summer, especially near marsh areas. Insect repellent is recommended, particularly at dusk.
- Allergies: Pollen counts can be high in spring and early summer, especially near the park's vegetation.
Local Tips
Visit for Birdwatching, Not Just Swimming: Orchard Beach is part of the Pelham Bay Park ecosystem and hosts 20+ species including Great Egrets, Ring-billed Gulls, and White-tailed Deer. Bring binoculars and visit in spring or fall for peak migratory activity. This is a hidden gem for NYC birders.
Arrive Early on Summer Weekends: Parking fills by 10–11 AM on sunny Saturdays and Sundays. Arrive before 9 AM or visit on a weekday.
The Beach is Crescent-Shaped: The curve of the beach creates calm, protected swimming on the eastern side. The western side near the marina is often choppier. Choose your spot based on conditions.
Bike the Park: Bring a bike or rent one—Orchard Beach's 115 acres include miles of paths perfect for cycling, and it's less crowded than the beach itself.
Free Amenities: The park includes bathhouses, playgrounds, sports fields, and picnic areas. Pack a lunch and spend the whole day without spending much money.
Walk the Promenade: The boardwalk-style path offers views of the East River and Westchester shores. It's beautiful at sunset.
No Dogs Allowed: Unlike many NYC parks, dogs are not permitted on Orchard Beach, so plan accordingly.
Nearby Attractions: The Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Garden are 10–15 minutes away by car. Consider combining a beach visit with other Bronx attractions.
