Spiaggia di Citara

Spiaggia di Citara Travel Guide

Spiaggia di Citara offers one of Ischia's most accessible thermal beach experiences. Located on the island's western coast in the town of Forio, this dark volcanic sand beach is distinguished by naturally warm, mineral-rich waters that emerge from the seafloor—a phenomenon that has made Ischia a thermal destination for over a century. The adjacent Poseidon Thermal Gardens complex provides managed access to the thermal springs, but the public beach itself delivers genuine warmth and wellness appeal without the spa facility premium.

Getting There

By Air

International visitors typically arrive at Naples International Airport (Capodichino, NAP), approximately 41 kilometers east of Spiaggia di Citara. This is the primary hub for the Campania region with connections throughout Europe and beyond.

From Naples airport, you have two primary routes to Forio d'Ischia (and thus Citara):

Route A: Ferry from Naples Molo Beverello (fastest)

  • Airport transfer to Naples port (approximately 30 minutes)
  • Hydrofoil ferry to Forio d'Ischia: 50–60 minutes direct
  • Total travel time: approximately 2–2.5 hours from airport touchdown
  • Ferry operator: Caremar, SNAV, or Tirrenia (multiple daily departures, summer increases frequency)
  • Cost: €12–15 ferry fare per person

Route B: Ferry from Pozzuoli (alternative)

  • Airport transfer to Pozzuoli port (approximately 25 minutes west)
  • Hydrofoil to Forio: 40–45 minutes
  • Slightly shorter airport transfer but similar total time
  • Fewer daily sailings than from Molo Beverello

Route C: Overnight ferry (budget option)

  • Evening departure from Molo Beverello
  • Overnight journey with cabin accommodation
  • Arrives Forio early morning
  • More expensive but adds accommodation

From Forio d'Ischia port, Spiaggia di Citara is approximately 2 kilometers (10–15 minutes by local bus, taxi, or walk).

By Car (if driving to Naples)

If arriving by car to Naples, drive to the Molo Beverello port area (central Naples waterfront). Parking exists at the port, though it fills quickly in summer. Ferry companies allow vehicle boarding on longer routes, but this is unnecessary for Ischia access—vehicles are rarely needed on the island given its small size and bus network.

Once on Ischia

Ischia operates an island-wide public bus network (EAV—Ente Autonomo Volturno) with routes connecting all major towns and beaches. From Forio d'Ischia port:

  • Direct bus: Route 1 or 7 runs from the port along the western coast; Spiaggia di Citara is a 5–10 minute journey
  • Cost: €2–3 per journey
  • Frequency: Buses run approximately every 15–30 minutes in summer, less frequently in winter

Taxi from Forio port: Approximately €8–12 to the beach (negotiate fare beforehand or use meter).

Walking: The waterfront path from Forio port to Citara is scenic but takes 20–25 minutes on foot with some elevation change.

Alternatively, if your ferry arrives at Ischia Porto (the island's easternmost port), take bus Route 1, 2, or 3 toward Forio (approximately 30–40 minutes travel time depending on route).

Seasonal Overview

Summer (June–August) is peak season. Daytime temperatures reach 78–86°F (26–30°C), with minimal rainfall and maximum daylight. Water temperatures are warm (72–77°F / 22–25°C), especially in the thermal zones. Expect significant crowds, particularly in July and August. Ferries run at maximum frequency, and all facilities and local restaurants operate at full capacity. This is the primary window for thermal bathing comfort, though the beach feels crowded.

Spring (April–May) offers mild weather (64–73°F / 18–23°C), fewer crowds, and increasingly frequent ferry services. Water temperature is cooler (59–64°F / 15–18°C), but the thermal springs still provide warm zones. This is an excellent shoulder season for those avoiding peak crowds.

Fall (September–October) mirrors spring with comfortable air temperatures (68–77°F / 20–25°C) and declining crowds after Labor Day. Water remains relatively warm (68–72°F / 20–22°C) through September. September maintains summer warmth but with noticeably fewer visitors. October brings increasing cloud cover and occasional rainfall.

Winter (November–March) is cool (46–57°F / 8–14°C) and wet, with limited ferry schedules and many local businesses closed for the season. Water temperature drops significantly (50–55°F / 10–13°C), though the thermal springs still provide relatively warm zones compared to ambient sea temperature. This is the "quiet season"—ideal for solitude-seekers but requires realistic expectations about facilities and weather.

Where to Stay

Spiaggia di Citara itself has no beachfront hotels—the beach is bordered by public promenade and the commercial Poseidon Thermal Gardens complex. However, accommodations exist throughout Forio and across Ischia, ranging from budget guesthouses to luxury hotels.

Forio (1–2 km away)

Forio is the primary town serving Citara, built on steep hillside terrain overlooking the coast. This is the most convenient base, with accommodations directly overlooking or within walking distance of the beach. Forio has a traditional Mediterranean village character with narrow streets, local restaurants, and a working fishing port. Most accommodations are small hotels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals rather than resort properties.

Accommodation types and price range:

  • Mid-range hotels: €80–150/night
  • Guesthouses and inns: €60–100/night
  • Vacation rentals (1–2 bedroom): €70–130/night
  • Luxury hotels: €150–300+/night

Lacco Ameno (northern coast, 8–10 km away)

Located on the island's northern coast, Lacco Ameno is Ischia's primary resort area with larger hotels, spas, and more upscale dining. This area is more developed and commercial than Forio, with better infrastructure but less character. A 15–20 minute bus ride or 30-minute coastal walk connects Lacco Ameno to Forio. This is a better base if you want resort amenities and don't mind slightly more distance from Citara.

Accommodation types and price range:

  • Resort hotels: €100–200/night
  • Mid-range hotels: €80–140/night
  • Vacation rentals: €80–150/night

Sant'Angelo (southern coast, 15–18 km away)

This picturesque fishing village on the island's southern tip offers exceptional character and charm. Sant'Angelo is car-free at its center, with narrow pathways and a working harbor. It's more remote than Forio but offers a genuinely Mediterranean village experience. A bus ride (approximately 40 minutes) or taxi (€20–25) is needed to reach Citara. This location is best for those prioritizing village atmosphere over beach proximity.

Accommodation types and price range:

  • Guesthouses and inns: €70–120/night
  • Small hotels: €100–160/night
  • Vacation rentals: €80–140/night

Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte (eastern ports, 15–20 km away)

These areas are primarily transit points, but hotels exist here. They offer port access but are the farthest from Citara. Day-trippers often bypass overnight accommodation here in favor of other island locations.

Accommodation Booking Strategy

Book 4–6 weeks ahead for summer visits; shoulder seasons (May, September–October) offer far more availability. Guesthouses and smaller hotels often require direct booking via their websites rather than aggregator platforms. The local tourism board (Consorzio Operatori Turistici Ischia) provides accommodation lists by category and proximity.

Costs

General Price Level

Safety

Swimming and Water Conditions

Spiaggia di Citara water quality is rated "excellent" by EU bathing water standards. However:

  • Thermal spring zones: The warmest water areas emerge from the seafloor in specific zones (visible as slightly shimmering water). These zones are safe but can reach temperatures uncomfortable for prolonged immersion. Respect your comfort level—you can exit immediately.
  • Currents: The bay is relatively protected and currents are mild, especially in the northern portions near the town.
  • Tidal variation: Minimal (Mediterranean has small tidal range—typically under 1 meter).
  • Shark incidents: Zero recorded incidents at Spiaggia di Citara.
  • Sea urchins: Present in Tyrrhenian coastal waters. Wear water shoes to avoid puncture wounds if walking on rocky areas or swimming in shallow zones with visible sea grass.
  • Visibility: Generally excellent; water clarity is high due to the open position facing the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Swimming is safe during daylight hours year-round. Avoid night swimming due to reduced visibility. Always use the buddy system.

General Safety

Forio and the surrounding area are safe, well-policed, and welcoming to tourists. Petty theft from vehicles and unattended belongings does occur (typical of crowded Mediterranean beaches); don't leave valuables unattended. Keep your ferry ticket and passport accessible.

Health Considerations

Thermal water is mineral-rich but not treated with chlorine. For most visitors, the water is safe and therapeutic. However, individuals with open wounds, immunocompromised conditions, or skin sensitivities should consult a physician before thermal bathing.

UV exposure is significant; sunscreen (SPF 30+) is essential even on cloudy days. The dark volcanic sand absorbs and retains heat—wear protective footwear or apply sunscreen to feet.

Water quality is monitored continuously by Italian health authorities; advisories are rare but check local notices before your visit.

Local Tips

Arrive early in summer. If visiting Saturday or Sunday in July or August, be at the beach by 8–9 AM to secure parking and enjoy a less crowded experience. By 10–11 AM, the beach reaches capacity.

The thermal zones shift slightly by season. In summer, warm water zones extend further into the bay. In cooler months, warm water is concentrated closer to the shore. Local beaches staff or the Poseidon Thermal Gardens admission staff can point you toward the warmest zones.

Bring layers. Even in summer, the air cools quickly after sunset. A light fleece or cover-up is useful for evening walks through Forio.

Explore Forio's narrow streets. The town above the beach has authentic character: local restaurants, small shops, and the Aragonese Castle viewpoint (accessible by a scenic walk). Don't miss the evening passeggiata (traditional Italian evening stroll) through the town center.

Visit local restaurants for dinner. The waterfront restaurants in Forio overlooking the coast serve excellent Campanian cuisine (fresh seafood, pasta, limoncello). Prices are higher than inland areas but justified by quality and views. Book dinner reservations in summer.

The Poseidon Thermal Gardens are worth visiting once. While pricey (€25–35), the complex offers access to multiple thermal pools, saunas, and a private section of the beach. The main public beach experience is free, but the spa complex provides therapeutic value if you're interested in full thermal immersion.

Ferry schedules are tighter in winter. If visiting October–April, check ferry times carefully; not all sailings run daily off-season. Download the Caremar or SNAV app for current schedules.

Scooters or e-bikes offer island freedom. Renting a two-wheeler (€25–40/day) allows you to explore beyond Forio to Sant'Angelo, Lacco Ameno, or the interior volcanic plateau. Island roads are narrow but manageable.

The sunset is exceptional. Spiaggia di Citara's western exposure creates dramatic evening light. The sunset typically peaks around 8–9 PM in summer; plan an evening beach visit or waterfront dinner to capture this.

Don't overestimate the "thermal" experience on the public beach. While warm zones exist, they're not as extensively developed as in the Poseidon Gardens complex. The public beach offers warm water but not the full spa experience. Set expectations accordingly.

Spring wildflowers (April–May) blanket the cliffs above Forio. If visiting in late spring, you'll see Mediterranean scrub vegetation in full bloom, adding color to your coastal experience.

Italian beaches close at sunset. Most facilities (bathrooms, vendors, rental services) shut down by early evening. Plan your beach time accordingly.
