Third Beach Travel Guide

Third Beach sits on Stanley Park's western seawall, at Ferguson Point, on Vancouver's west side. There is no direct road onto the sand itself, and no road-distance or transit-route figures for reaching it are confirmed in available sources.

Getting there

The beach is about 12.4 km from Vancouver International Airport (YVR), measured as a straight line rather than a driving distance -- no road-distance figure for this route is available. It sits roughly 2.9 km from the West End, the nearest neighbourhood to the park. Paid parking is available directly at Third Beach's own lot (part of the Stanley Park seawall parking system) -- the same ground once occupied by the WWII battery's soldiers' camp.

Season and hours

Lifeguards are on duty from Victoria Day to Labour Day -- late May to early September -- and off duty the rest of the year, when swimming is unsupervised. Water-quality sampling runs weekly from May 10 through October 10 each season, with results posted by Swim Drink Fish -- Vancouver (formerly Fraser Riverkeeper). As of the most recent posted sample, taken September 9, 2026, the beach met water-quality standards.

Safety

Water quality here has not been consistently clean. In June 2024, Vancouver Coastal Health placed Third Beach under a joint bacteria investigation along with Sunset and Second beaches after repeated spikes; by July 2025, Third Beach's five-sample average had reached 224 E. coli per 100 mL, above the province's 200 threshold. Since 2023, a single sample above 235 E. coli per 100 mL is enough to trigger a new investigation, down from 400 before that. Checking the current advisory before swimming is worth the extra step.

The seawall itself has failed before: a storm surge and king tide on January 7, 2022 damaged a 3.5-kilometre stretch between Second Beach and Lions Gate Bridge, at an estimated repair cost of $1.5 million; the final section reopened that April.

Third Beach's Tuesday-evening drum circle, Brahm's Tams, has its own safety history. A near-drowning in the crowd led organizers and the park to pull lifeguards from the event on Tuesday evenings, add fencing, and bring in temporary police patrols. Community guidelines for the gathering prohibit open alcohol or drug use, dogs on the beach, and open fires.
